Information Security College Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Information Security College - Essay Example Information security essentially requires that the genuine parties to a transaction are identified, the actions they are allowed to perform are determined and their actions are limited to only those that are necessary to initiate and complete the transaction. Anything beyond that means that an intrusion attack is taking place. A new technology that has come up to secure information is the use of "tokens". Token is a form of two-factor authentication whereby the user needs a combination of something he knows for e.g. a password and something he has e.g. a token, to log on to a system. Tokens come in various shapes and sizes and they are mainly of two types; "passive tokens" are storage devices that contain a secret code that allow users to gain access to a network, whereas "active tokens" are usually small stand-alone electronic devices that generate a one-time password that is only useful for a single log-on and the user logs on to the system using this one-time password. Currently there are 20 vendors who are involved in the marketing of these handheld devices and the price ranges from $30 to $100 per unit. Companies wanting to use this technology can choose anything that serves their need and purpose because it can be customized and costs accordingly. However, four vendors are the market leaders because their products are sold the most; three vendors have the token device the size of a small calculator with a keyboard and use a 'challenge response' strategy. The fourth vendor supplies a device that is the size of a credit card and operates on a random number basis. Tokens are becoming increasingly popular among major companies today because they provide a very good and reliable solution to safeguard information. Over the years, companies have tried various means by which the network and information of the company would remain safe and not get in the wrong hands. However, more often than not, expert hackers have managed to break in and damage the whole network of companies. As a result of this, companies have faced enormous amounts of losses and experienced damages beyond repair. Companies using the technology of tokens are realizing that it is becoming extremely significant for the smooth running of their business without fearing the attack from hackers and losing valuable information. Tokens offer several advantages mainly: The password used in tokens is dynamic and cannot be re-used or guessed as it is a one-time password only. Tokens save costs as less money is spent on installing security technologies like firewalls etc and expert personnel don't need to be hired for the maintenance of these technologies. Since all the transactions require digital signing, it validates user identity. Even if the token device is lost or stolen, other built-in features prevent illegal access. Some tokens also have an audit trail and a built-in alarm that alerts the security director or mainframe operator to illegal access attempts. The size of the devices are such that they are portable and enable authentication for members of the company from anywhere, anytime. As more and more businesses are going online, the need to protect the company's network from attacks is greater than ever. A large amount of high-tec information passes to and fro among

Work experience placement to Little Sutton Nursery and Club Essay Example for Free

Work experience placement to Little Sutton Nursery and Club Essay Between 9 June and 20 June 2003 I went on a work experience placement to Little Sutton Nursery and Club. The placement lasted for two weeks. I worked Monday to Friday from 8. 45 a. m. to 3. 30 p. m. My main supervisor, who was the Manager of the Nursery, was Mrs. Debbie Blythe. On the first day I arrived at 8. 40 a. m. and I was introduced to the other members of staff. During the work experience placement I carried out a variety of jobs. The main job, which was extremely important and had to be carried out from the moment the children arrived to the moment they left, was supervising them. The days at the nursery were very structured. The children arrived at 9. 00 a. m. Between 9. 00 a. m. and 9. 30 a. m. was the time when the children sat on the carpet. The register was taken and a story was read to them. At 9. 30 a. m. the children did different activities these varied from craft to learning to count. At 10. 45 a. m. the children helped the staff to tidy up the activity they were doing. After tidying up the younger children went to the toilet before having a drink and some fruit. After having a break it was playtime again until 11. 50 a. m. when it was lunchtime. At lunchtime the children went into the dining hall with the Infant Scholl. They all had cooked school dinners. Lunchtime usually lasted about 25 minutes. After dinner the children watched a video lunch about 1. 30 p. m. At 1. 30 p. m. it was playtime until 2. 45 p. m. At this time all activities and toys were completely cleared away. The children were given a drink and a story was read until it was time for them to go home at 3. 15 p. m. While the children playing or carrying out activities, such as craft, I would do a variety of jobs. Almost everyday or my placement, I was asked to supervise the craft activity in the morning. This itself involved a number of tasks. I had to make sure each child was wearing an apron. I also had to write the childs name on their work. Once the child had finished the activity, I had to make sure the work was put on a rack to dry. I also had to make sure the children did not run out of glue or paint etc. Sometimes a child would ask me to read them a story. This usually gained the attention of other children and I would end up reading to a small group. A lot of the time the children wanted me to play with them. One day during my placement, I organised a game of dominoes with a group of six children. At break time I would sometimes make drinks for the children and prepare the fruit. Another job which I really enjoyed doing and I felt was rewarding was helping the children to complete counting books which the Nursery had produced. I think that the children enjoyed doing this with me and I found this interesting. I also learn a new skill which I how to teach children to count. I found this my most rewarding achievement. As well as teaching children to count, I also learnt many other different skills on my placement. An important thing which I had to do when reading to children was to speak clearly. I am usually a quite unclear and very fast speaker, however, during the placement I improved this skill. Another thing which I found to be very important when handling children was to have patience. Very often the children did not do as they were told the first time and therefore this meant I must have patience with them. I found this became easier as time went on. During my placement I found that I didnt really encounter many problems. However, in the first week I found myself asking questions constantly about where things were kept. After the first week I almost knew where everything was kept and routines became more familiar to me. Another minor problem I encountered was with some of the children. They were very stubborn and would not do as I asked. This was worrying sometimes as I felt they were endangering themselves. I resolved this problem by informing another member of staff. At my placement there were between 10 and 12 other members of staff. I found most of the staff very pleasant and willing to help me. However, I few of the staff were quite intimidating and I felt a little uncomfortable or lost for words when I was around them. Also, I found one of the members of staff to be very condescending. I felt as though she was talking down to me and spoke to me in the same way in which she spoke to the children. This really got on my nerves at first, but after a while I chose to ignore it and not to let it bother me. This placement has helped me to understand the disadvantages and advantages of this type of work. It has also helped me to decide on what I would like to do in the future. I found out that being a Nursery Assistant is a very badly paid job, although it is very hard work. This is the only real disadvantage of this type of job. I think the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This job can be very difficult at times, but can also be very rewarding. I think that young children are lovely to work with. This placement has made me realise that I would definitely like to work with children as a future career.

Anti-hygroscopicity of Ammonium Nitrate (AN)

Anti-hygroscopicity of Ammonium Nitrate (AN) Anti-hygroscopicity of Ammonium Nitrate (AN) coated by surfactant materials Baha Eldien Ismail Abd Allah Elzaki1,2, Zhang Yue Jun2 Abstract The ammonium nitrate (AN) particles were coated by surfactant materials, using precipitation coating method. The hygroscopicity of AN coated and AN without coating (used as control) were tested, and the samples of AN coated by surfactant materials, and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and surface morphology of samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mass friction of coating layer, and decline of absorption rate were calculated. The results indicate that cetylalcohol promising coating surfactant material for AN among the materials tested, namely, stearic acid, octadecylamine, alcohol, palmitic acid, and lauric acid. The mass friction of coating layer, and decline of absorption rate of AN coated by cetylalcohol were 0.98%, and 28.28%, respectively. The idea and approach presented in this paper have potential to made hydrophobic surface on the surface of AN particles to become anti-hygroscopicity. and also used in other energetic materials t o reduce sensitivity. Keywords: Ammonium nitrate (AN); Hygroscopicity; Anti-hygroscopicity; Surfactant materials, Precipitation coating Introduction: Ammonium nitrate (AN) (NH4NO3), is produced by the reaction of anhydrous ammonia gas(NH3), and aqueous nitric acid (HNO3) [1, 2]. Which is present as the major component in most industrial explosives, such as amatol, ANFO, and also used in fertilizers[3-6]. AN is of considerable interest as potential eco- friend oxidizing in solid propellants[2, 7-9]. The risks of used oxidizer ammonium perchlorate (AP) in solid propellants was realized with the hydrogen chloride (HCL) with water form hydrochloric acid which produces highly toxic smoke, this cause significant damage to the environment, due this is reason replaced by AN as oxidizer in solid propellants[10, 11]. It is one of the cheapest, and easily available oxidizer. However, its use in large rocket motors and as solid propellants is restricted due to the hygroscopicity[12]. The molecules of AN are polar it easy absorb the polar moisture from the surrounding, leads to dissolved AN[13]. R.S. Damse used waterproofing materials mineral jelly and other to reduce hygroscopicity of AN[14]. Kun-Lun Hu et.at., used octadecane amine, resin wax and etc as coating agent for coating AN particles (20- 04 meshes), used melting process. Zhang et.al. used silane coupling agent KH792 for coating AN particles (50-75 meshes), used surface chemical coating[15]. The present work deals with a new approach to form the hydrophobic layer on the surface AN particles, by precipitation surfactant materials on the surface of AN molecules. to increase the decline of absorption rate, and decrease mass friction of coating layer, in the conditions of absorption rate measurement, the size of particles of AN are 70-140 meshes, temperature is 35 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, and the relative humidity is 67.5%. Materials and Method: Materials: AN supplied by Kecheng fine chemical CO. Ltd (+99.0% Shanghai, China ), Trichloromethane (+99.0%, Shanghai Ling Feng Chemical Reagent Co. LTD , China), and Cyclohexane (≠¥99.5% Industrial development zone, Chengdu, China). Surfactant materials used AlcoholC18, Stearic Acid, Cetylalcohol, Palmic acid, and Lauric acid (≠¥99.0% Chengdu Kelong chemical Reagent , China), Octadecylamine (≠¥99%Tianjin Fine Chemical Research Institute). Method. 6g of AN coated by 2g of surfactant materials in 15ml chloroform and 15ml cyclohexane. The reaction with stirring at 60oC about 2 h stopped heat, let the reaction contents cooling, the temperature decreasing to 35oC in 5 h, at this stage the water of bath heating was changed, and when the temperature reach to 30oC, the end of reaction. AN coated was filtered by vacuum filter, and drying at 50oC, after drying 5g of AN coated tested at35à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, humidity is 67.5% absorption rate test 24h Measurement of absorption rate. The samples were weighed 5g in 30Ãâ€"60 mm weighing bottle without cap, placed in a desiccator containing saturated solution of strontium chloride (relative humidity 68%) of the absorbent 35 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™ 24 h, absorption rate of humidity HR was measured by the following equation: Where: HR- absorption rate,%; M0 absorbent sample before mass, g; M mass of the sample after the moisture, g. Mass fraction of coating layer test. Mass friction of coating layer was determined by wetted the filtration paper, dried 1h in an oven weighting (WB). A sample of AN coated after absorption humidity was dissolved in water, and filtered through a tapered funnel, the filter paper was washed by water several times, and placed in an oven 1h, weighing again(WA). The mass fraction of the coating layer was calculated by the following equation: Where: W- mass fraction of coating layer,%. M0 mass of sample before absorbed moisture, g. M1 mass of coating layer, g= WA WB Decline of moisture absorption rate was calculated by following equation: Where: A- decline of moisture absorption rate,%. HR1 absorption rate of AN sample,%. HR2 absorption rate of coated AN sample,%. Characterization. Spectra of the samples were recorded on a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer (Thermo Scientific Nicolet I S10, Thermo Fisher USA) by using KBr pellets. Surfaces modified were observed for their morphological study under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (JEOL JSM 6380LV, Japan). Results and Discussion The absorption rate , mass friction of coating layer and decline of AN coated by different kind of surfactant materials are presented in table 1, in this table used cetylalcohol, alcohol C18, octadecylamine, stearic acid, Palmitic acid, and lauric acid to coated AN , the data from hygroscopicity test clearly indicate that cetylalcohol is the best surfactant materials to coating AN lower mass friction of coating layer was 0.98%, and high decline of absorption rate was 28.28%. Stearic acid and octadecylamine were found second and third best, respectively, while alcohol C18, Palmitic acid and lauric acid followed the order sequentially (table 1). It is seen that when change the concentration of solvents, the decline of absorption rate of AN coated by cetylalcohol, stearic acid, and octadecylamine were slightly decreased, and the decline of AN coated by alcohol C18, Palmitic acid, and Lauric acid were slightly increased (table 2). Also the best coating surfactant materials is cetylalcoho l, has highly decline was 24.09%, and lower mass friction coating layer was 0.89%. Table (1) 2g of surfactant materials, 6 g of AN, 15 mL of chloroform + 15 mL cyclohexane HR measurement conditions (70 mesh 140 mesh or more T = 35 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™ humidity is 67.5%) No Surfactants Absorption Rate % Mass friction of coating layer% Decline % 1 Cetylalcohol 5.85 0.98 28.28 2 Stearic acid 6.45 1.20 19.89 3 Octadecylamine 7.71 1.18 19.62 4 Alcohol C18 6.42 0.39 13.13 5 Palmitic acid 6.11 1.14 3.52 6 Lauric acid 6.24 0.87 3.79 Table (2) 2g of surfactant materials, 6 g of AN, 30 mL of chloroform, at 60oC, HR measurement conditions (70 mesh 140 mesh or more T = 35 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™ humidity is 67.5%). The absorption rate directly proportional with time. The lowest regression was obtained from AN coated by cetylalcohol (a), and the highest regression was obtained from AN without coating(d). The absorption rate of AN coated by cetylalcohol is significant than reported in Previous studies[16, 17]. Figure (1) effect of time on the hygroscopicity (Absorption rate) of AN coated by cetylalcohol (a), alcohol C18 (b), stearic acid (c), and AN without coated (d) The influence of the amount of surfactant materials on the decline of absorption rate and mass friction of coating layer were studies on the AN coated by different amounts of cetylalcohol, (0.5, 1.0 1.5, 2.0. and 2.5 g), the regression of decline of absorption rate was increased to high value at 2.0 g of cetylalcohol, then decreased at 2.5g of cetylalcohol, this is due to polar head of surfactant not precipitated on the surface of AN particles, and this causes hydrophilic surface leads to increased hygroscopicity, thus, decreased decline of absorption rate. The mass friction of coating layer directly proportional with the amount of surfactant materials(figure 2). This results significant than results reported in literature[18, 19]. Figure (2) effect of amount of surfactants materials on the absorption rate and mass friction of coating layer. In the measurement of absorption rate used 30Ãâ€"60 mm weighing bottle without cap, the effect of amount of sample in this bottle was studied, the weight of samples were tested 10, 15, 20, and 25 g. The regression of absorption rate is inversely proportional to the weight of the sample, in the both AN coated by cetylalcohol, and AN without coating (figure 3). Figure (3) effect of weight of samples on the absorption rate Characterization: FTIR Absorption Spectra. The surface modified of AN and AN without modified were monitored by using FTIR measurement as depicted in figure 4. Alkanes C-H stretch peak around 3000-2850 cm-1was appeared after coating AN by cetylalcohol (a), higher than AN by alcohol C18, and steric acid in (b) and (d), respectively. Alkanes no appeared in AN without coating in (c). Hence, alkenes non polar has effected on hygroscopicity. Figure 4 FTIR spectra of the ammonium nitrate coated by cetylalcohol (a); ammonium nitrate coated by alcohol C18 (b); ammonium nitrate without coating (c); ammonium nitrate coated by steric acid (d). Scanning Electron Microscopy. The surface morphology in figure (5) presented the AN coated by cetylalcohol has a clear difference in shape particles and the surface smooth than, AN coated by stearic acid (figure 6), octadecylamine(figure 7) , and alcohol C18(figure 8), and ammonium nitrate without coating were observed in figure 9. Figure 5. Scanning electron microscope of surface modification of AN coated by cetylalcohol. The scale bar represents,100 µm. Electron micrographs. Figure 6. In this study the cetylalcohol has been found to be the best surfactant materials for coating ammonium nitrate among the materials tested. The mass friction of coating layer of cetylalcohol was found 0.98%, and decline 28.28%, at the hygroscopicity test conditions temperature 30oC, 68% RH, and time 24h. the optimum amount of surfactant material 2g to coating 6g Ammonium nitrate. The samples were characterized by using FTIR spectra, and SEM. The weight of samples in hygroscopicity test effected significantly on the hygroscopicity of AN.

Free Essays on Homers Odyssey: Powerful Women of Homer’s Odyssey :: Homer Odyssey Essays

The Powerful Women of Homer’s Odyssey There is really no way to generalize the women in Homer’s Odyssey because they all have their own distinct traits that make each of them great, strong, and powerful women. A very powerful woman is Arete. She is as powerful as the king, Alcinous. Her daughter Nausicaa is an amazing woman, even though she is so young. She displays great intelligence in handling Odysseus. These women I speak of above are great women in a good sort of way but there are also some very bad women that still have some amazing qualities. For instance Clytemnestra who has great vengeance and deceit. Another Homeric women that breaks the mold is Helen. She is so independent and headstrong it’s almost scary. These qualities I’m applying to all these women are not their only but they are the most memorable. In fact some of them share the traits I have already laid out. One other thing I would like to mention before I go on is how different these women are from what I expected. I thought they would all be weak and completely under the control of the heroic men but all the ones I’ve mentioned are very powerful and could probably do with out their men. I know Helen would be all right with out Menelaus.      Ã‚  Ã‚   Helen is extremely independent and fairly evil. For the most part only does what she wants to do. First off she ran away with Paris and started the Trojan war. Now I know it’s said that Paris took her but I would beg to differ. The best example I have is the horse story Menelaus tells Telemecus. It begins with the men in the Trojan horse waiting to ambush the city, and Helen walked around it â€Å"Three times..... / feeling, and stroking its flanks, / challenging all the fighters, calling each by name -† (Hom. 4. 310-312). What Helen wanted to do was blow the Greeks cover and help the Trojans win the war. This also shows how smart she is because the Greeks had been away from there wives for ten years and were getting a little lonely. Homer tells us that Anticlus â€Å"was hot to salute† her, but of course Odysseus had to save everyone from her (Hom. 4.320). This whole story gives a lot of insight to Helen and what she wanted. The Underground Railroad Essay -- UGRR Slavery

Introduction Imagine yourself a slave, hungry, beaten, and sick with grief at having had your freedom, family and all that makes you human stripped from you. But then, you get word of a way out of it all. It will separate you from all whom you love, it will endanger your life, but that is the price for freedom from the slavery of the south. Fellow slaves begin acting strangely, gathering tools, clothing, and food. You look around, and all you see is a freshly washed quilt hanging out to dry. Then you begin to realize that there is a new quilt every few days, each with a new pattern, and with each quilt, your fellow slaves correspondingly perform more and more preparative tasks. So you join them, realizing this is your only chance to become human again, your chance to dupe the system and win your freedom as the ultimate prize. Finally, now that you’ve caught on to the messages contained in the quilts and spiritual songs, you see that long awaited pattern, â€Å"tumbling boxes,† and you don’t look back. From here on out, it is all relying on your instincts, and your wit. There are people that will help you, but twice as many that want to kill you. Good luck and god-speed, you have just joined the Underground Railroad, see you in Canada! The Underground Railroad was neither a railroad nor underground. It was a complex network of freed slaves, black sympathizers, and northern abolitionists. Famous names that adorned the railroad were Harriet Tubman, William Still, and Frederick Douglass, to name a few. In the heart of the South, there was an informal, yet highly complex system evolving. The institution of slavery had wrenched the hearts of too many, and now they were quietly rebelling. Named during the steam engin... ...W. Norton & Company, 1996 Siebert, Wilber H. Hair Removal: What is the Best Way? :: Persuasive Argumentative Essays

Hair Removal: What is the Best Way? Susie really needed to go to the bathroom. She had been enjoying a peaceful slumber until the urge hit. Quickly, Susie threw back the covers and sprinted to the bathroom. She reached for the doorknob and tried to turn it, but it would not budge. Her sister, Caroline, was locked in the bathroom. "Caroline, I really have to go!" "I am sorry , Susie." "Caroline, you really do not understand." "Well, Susie, if you could find a better way to get rid of the hair on my legs, then I would not have to occupy the tub for this long. Until then...leave me alone!!" "Caroline...Caroline?" And with that, Susie gave up. She just decided that she would have to wait another half hour while Caroline finished plucking every single hair from her legs. Caroline had tried many different methods for hair elimination, but she still had not found one that suited her. All techniques of hair removal -- depilatory lotion, laser, wax, soap and water shave, and electric razor -- accomplish the same goal, but they do it in very different ways. However, I feel the best option for hair removal today is the electric razor. Now I will explain each form of hair removal and how they all have advantages, but I will prove why I feel the electric razor method is the best. The first type of hair disrooting is depilatory lotion. It is fairly easy to use, but sometimes the strong odor of the lotion offends users. Consumers simply squeeze a small amount from the bottle and apply it to the designated area. After the lotion has been allowed to penetrate, it is wiped off and the roots of the hair are dissolved. The pain is minimal; usually none occurs unless the user suffers an allergic reaction. If that happens, the fault lies with the consumer. The directions should have been read by the consumer, and a test should have been performed also. The price is moderate; it is not as expensive as a different technique, but there are some methods that are cheaper. A bottle of lotion ranges from $5.00 to $6.00, and it would last for 20 to 25 applications. The effects also last a reasonable length of up to a week. However, the lotion needs to be applied every week to keep the desired effect. The second method of hair removal is lasers.

“Imagining the Immigrant” by John J Savant Essay

A Rhetorical Analysis of â€Å"Imagining the Immigrant† by John J Savant According to the emeritus professor, John J Savant, imagination is centripetal, a discipline contemplation of reality that takes us beneath appearances and into the essence of what we contemplate.(374 ) In Savant’s essay, he was ,generally speaking, towards an audience to the people of our country and also the government. .The essay focuses on the importance of immigrant laws in guarding the right of immigrants in the United States. Savants successfully expresses his ideas and problems in this essay by using the rhetorical appeal of pathos, the call to the audience’s emotions, and to also gain support from the crowd and connect them to the issues he acknowledges on an emotional level. Savant effectively makes use of pathos throughout his introduction and captures the reader’s attention from the beginning by saying, â€Å"Great detectives, we are told, are able to think like criminals. Similarly, effective therapist learn to enter into the fantasies of their patients† (374), immediately appealing to â€Å"emotions†. He felt that most individuals can relate to his saying because it all has to do with our own imagination on how we think of certain things- being able to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. He mentions those stories about Eusebio and Marta who are living in poverty. Yet, mostly everyone knows there are real lawbreakers in our presence, and they are not alone. Savant overemphasized during this part of his essay, which makes his audience feel manipulated. He made no real argument; it was all based on his passion and imagination. The target audience is mainly towards the government and the people of our country. He wants the reader to think outside of the box, putting themselves in his/her shoes. â€Å"If we are not to betray the dream, we simply must imagine better† (375). At this point, his audience does not feel influenced, and he failed with where his argument was going. He wants his audience to imagine, imagine, Imagine, which makes it hard on the reader because he did not give enough argument as to why imagination in America is the cause of its downfall. John Savants purpose of this essay was to encourage the reader to be more open-minded when it comes to illegal immigrants. As a nation, he felt they should be able to balance the difference between moral and legal issues and to be able to come together in order to create something perfect. His purpose was to get them to understand, are they able to get past venerable logic to discover, grasp, promote morally required options, demanded in loving their neighbors. To sum up, Savant could have made his essay stronger than what it is. His argument was not strong enough in order for his audience to fully get where he is coming from. He over exaggerated in some parts of the essay making it seem like he wants them to feel sympathy. Savant was very big on imagination, not real life issues. He made no argument based on reality, historical situations, the economy, or even the government, it was all based on his own imagination and emotion.
